The Nigerian embassy in Washington, DC and its consulate in New York accounts have been frozen by the US government under the suspicion of money laundering which caused, eyebrows to be raised on the accounts they have with Bank of America, Wells Fargo and M&T bank.
It was said $3.6 million came into the account ant left within a month and a staff at the Nigerian embassy withdrew $50,000 in cash.
As a result the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Treasury are monitoring all wire transfer funds and accounts operated by the embassy. The Republic of the Federation of Nigeria has sent top auditors look into the matter and resolve the issue. This situation has made it difficult for the embassy to open accounts in the US.
According to sources, Nigerian government is also threatening to freeze the accounts of the US as well if the issue is not resolved.
